Humans and their non-humans

Human-pet relationships are a complex part of social life; pets can be ‘part of the family’ as much-loved companions, and can be seen to signify wealth or status (or a lack thereof). The intensity of the human-pet relationship can be rewarding, from helping shape our social identity, to assisting us in our homes.

We will look at the curious and changing relationship people have with their pets. Why do love our pets as much as we do? Are human-pet relations mutually beneficial? What can biological and sociological research tell us about the human-pet relationship?

The event will be chaired by Professor Claire Molloy, Director of the Centre for Human Animal Studies, Edge Hill University.

Our expert speakers for the evening will be:

• Dr John Bradshaw, Visiting Fellow at the School of Veterinary Science, University of Bristol
• Professor Nickie Charles, Professor and Director of the Centre for the Study of Women and Gender, University of Warwick
• Professor Daniel Mills, Professor of Veterinary Behavioural Medicine, University of Lincoln

The panel of researchers will discuss current knowledge and their research about the human-pet relationship. They will answer questions about this fascinating aspect of the social world as we explore and celebrate this peculiar aspect of being human.
