Discover the two major factors which brought about the development of Kensington: the creation of the Palace in the 17th century along with residences for courtiers, and the epoch-making Great Exhibition of 1851 from which spread Albertopolis. This is the town of the Albert Hall, the cultural colleges and the grand-scale houses where Kensington became the place to live. Its link with the Underground Metropolitan Railway enhanced the area as a centre of great museums and as a major shopping centre for west London.
