Since the time of the Ancient Greeks, philosophers have pondered on the nature and purpose of the arts, but artists have gone on making them and audiences enjoying them – or not – regardless of these musings.
Philosopher and cultural critic Raymond Tallis and Julian Spalding, former director of the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow, examine the purpose of the arts today and discuss why artists create. According to Tallis, the arts spring from our inability as humans fully to experience our experiences; from our hunger for a more rounded, more complete sense of the world. The audience will be warmly invited to join in the discussion.
