Minority Rights Group International (MRG) recently launched its flagship publication, State of the World’s Minorities and Indigenous Groups 2013, with a focus on health. Minority and indigenous peoples across the world continue to face lower levels of access to essential health care and experience poorer health outcomes due to poverty, marginalization and governmental neglect. Securing their right to health, with an emphasis on participatory platforms that allow users to engage in health systems on their own terms, must be a key priority of the post-Millennium Development Goal (MDG) framework to ensure greater health equality for these groups.

MRG is therefore organizing a seminar, ‘Reducing inequalities in minority and indigenous health: Rights, participation and the post-MDG framework’, to explore ways forward for policy makers and service providers to improve the health situation of minority and indigenous groups. The seminar will take place from 1.30pm to 5.30pm on 12 December 2013, with three expert panel presentations and Q&A sessions on the separate themes of rights, participation and the post-MDG framework.

The event will provide researchers and practitioners from different sectors the opportunity to share their perspectives on the key barriers and opportunities to better health outcomes. Participating panellists will include Meghna Abraham (Amnesty International, TBC), Sarah Edwards (Health Poverty Action), Zoe Gray (International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness), Coll Hutchinson (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine), Sarah Sargent (University of Buckingham), Alex Shankland (Institute of Development Studies) and Sridhar Venkatapuram (King’s College London).

Attendance at the event is free, but advance registration is required. If you wish to attend, please send an email to [email protected] with the heading ‘Registration’.
