Signifying Misdirection: ‘re-inking’ and reframing our queer of colour selves in contemporary fiction and graphic narratives. A book talk and signing event.
As part of London Met’s LGBTQIA History month we welcome author Dr Monalesia Earle to talk about her book alongside music from Sherika Sherard. Dr Earle will be signing copies of her book which will be available to buy on the night.
Using the hybrid form of graphic narratives/comics, the methodological framework of ‘misdirection’, and the textual richness of literary fiction as a bridge to generate new conversations about race, gender, queer identity and trauma, Dr Earle discusses how the historical under-representation of queer women of colour in literature can be more creatively challenged.
Dr Earle grew up in Brooklyn, New York and has since lived in many parts of the world. She moved to the UK in 2004, studied at Birkbeck, University of London, where she received an MA in Gender Studies and a PhD in English and Humanities. She also holds an undergraduate degree in Social Work from the University of Alaska, and a graduate degree in Social Work from Columbia University, New York. Dr Earle is an independent researcher currently living in Liverpool. Dr Earle will be signing copies of her book which will be available to buy on the night at the reduced price of £20.
In addition, we have the incredible Sherika Sherard coming to perform her music. Through songwriting, Sherika vows to encourage the conversations that make us vulnerable. From charming one-liners to heart-felt confessions Sherika uncovers our complex journeys through a celebration of acceptance and continuously warms the hearts of her listeners. Born and raised in South London, it was after listening to Marvin Gaye Sherika came to realise she also wanted to discover her deepest emotions through performance and songwriting. Sherika has opened for Seal and had music personally chosen by Spike Lee to feature on his “She’s Gotta Have it” Netflix Show
