Louise Weiss, Eight Hearts, 2013Prompted by exhibiting artist Lutz Bacher’s own use of a pseudonym, this talk considers the myriad ways hidden identities impact on artistic practices. The discussion explores how the use of a pseudonym can help or hinder creativity; how it effects questions of ownership and authorship; and how it relates to branding and promotion. Although grounded in the visual arts, the panel will also explore larger concerns, extending to literature, to a history of the pseudonym and to how it relates to contemporary culture in regards to issues such as privacy, fame and the Internet.

Chaired by Patricia McManus, the panel comprises Olivier Castel, Carmela Ciuraru and Josh Cohen.
