Following on from our highly successful evenings on understanding classical and contemporary ballet, The How To Academy presents – How To: Understand The Art of Tango.
The origins of the word ‘Tango’ are heavily contested. Some say it is from the Latin tangere, meaning ‘touch.’ Others claim it is from the Ibibio African word tamgu, meaning ‘to dance.’ Whatever the word’s true etymology, it is without doubt that the essence of this dance is indivisible from the human desire for interaction. After all, it takes two to Tango. In this sense, the Tango is the most connective of dances.
Our introduction to the Argentine Tango, will take in the history and evolution of the dance. Bursting free from the horror of the Transatlantic slave trade, and fusing with the homesickness of European immigrants to the New World; Buenos Aires provided the perfect melting pot for the conception of this incredibly beautiful, and controversial, expression of sorrow, joy and desire.
On stage our tangera and tangeuro, Natalie and Mark, will exhibit the demonstrations and techniques of the leg wraps and embraces that constitute this sensual and risqué dance. You will watch from the comfort of your seats, as they use their 15 years of experience to take you through the Tango’s fascinating and troubled story.
