Shakespeare wrote of island Britain as ‘This fortress built by nature for herself against infection and the hand of war’. A look at Britain in the 21st century in an age of rapid travel, major migrations and emerging drug resistant infections will consider why Britain is no longer a ‘fortress’ and what the implications are for its inhabitants and health services.

Christopher Whitty is a clinical epidemiologist who works as a physician and in international public health and policy. He trained in medicine and physiological science in Oxford, worked as a clinician in Oxford, Edinburgh, London, Malawi, Thailand and in public health research in Africa, Asia and the UK. Postgraduate training in epidemiology, economics and law. Currently seconded as Chief Scientific Advisor and Director Research & Evidence Division, UK Department for International Development (DFID) alongside continuing LSHTM and NHS roles. NHS consultant physician in tropical and infectious diseases at The Hospital for Tropical Diseases, acute general medicine at UCLH, and consultant epidemiologist for the Health Protection Agency Malaria Reference Laboratory. Prior to post with DFID Director of the LSHTM Malaria Centre, trustee of Merlin, chair of the Department of Health National Expert Panel on New and Emerging Infections (NEPNEI) and director of the ACT Consortium.
