As part of The Brixton Drawing Project – the intriguing 6 day drawing experience taking place in a refurbished furniture factory in Brixton between 1 and 6 October 2013 – art historian Nicholas Friend, Oxbridge polymath and founder-director of INSCAPE, will give a talk on the year 1871.
Intended as an introduction to the drawing project – itself an exploration of this specific space via drawing and collaboration between artists, musicians and interested parties who happen by – the lecture will help to situate the project and its building by exploring the year in which this once unprepossessing furniture warehouse was built on an odd-shaped triangle of land left by the building of the brand new railway through Brixton.
One of a long series of talks taking particular years from history as starting points, Nicholas’ lecture will draw upon his considerable breadth and depth of knowledge, to bring together political, socio-economic and art-historical factors, amongst all others, in this unravelling and re-telling of the stories of 1871.
A short Q&A session will follow the lecture.
The talk takes place in the building itself, which remained a furniture factory throughout its long history, and which has now been lovingly refurbished and named Brixton East.
The evening will also feature specially produced gin cocktails – served by our very own 1871 barman, Mr Smith.
