Join the Royal College of Physicians for a special free lecture, part of the season marking its 500th anniversary, reflecting on the history and future of medicine, society and health.

In this event, The Right Honourable Sir Ernest Ryder, Senior President of Tribunals in the United Kingdom and judge of the Court of Appeal in England and Wales, will examine the ethical constructs underpinning professionalism in both medicine and the law.

How can the competing challenges of austerity, price rationing, good practice and universal access to healthcare be balanced?

What role does leadership in the medical and legal professions have in protecting individuals and setting standards to which institutions and government can be held to account?

In this fascinating lecture, Sir Ernest sets out his views on how individual and collective professionalism in both medicine and the law can deliver real benefits to the broader community.

The Right Honourable Sir Ernest Ryder is Senior President of Tribunals in the United Kingdom and judge of the Court of Appeal in England and Wales. He is also a judicial member of the Board of Her Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Service.  He was formerly a judge of the Family Division of the High Court.  Prior to his appointment to the bench he was a family and administrative law silk practising from chambers in Manchester.

Until his appointment to the Court of Appeal, Sir Ernest was the senior Presiding Judge of the Northern Circuit where he sat in the criminal, civil and administrative as well as family courts.  As Judge in Charge of the Modernisation of Family Justice, he was responsible for the creation of the Family Court and the family justice modernisation programme.
