As part of our Shackleton centenary commemorations this evening celebrates the accomplishments of two of Antarctica’s greatest explorers: Ernest Shackleton, shown in archive footage from the film South; and Ranulph Fiennes who recounts an exhilarating life of expeditions.

This special screening of the BFI’s restored version of South will be followed by a presentation by Sir Ranulph Fiennes, who will reflect upon the Endurance expedition and share inspiring and fascinating stories of his own expeditions to remote regions.

Sir Ranulph Fiennes was described as “the world’s greatest living explorer” by the Guinness Book of Records in 1984. Since then, he has gone on to break many more world records and lead many more expeditions, including the 2009 Everest Nepal Summit, when he became the first person to summit Everest and cross both polar ice caps. Ran’s expeditions have raised over £14 million for UK charities, and he is recipient of the Polar Medal and the Society’s Founder’s Medal, as well as several other prestigious awards.
