Synopsis

• The pollination activity of bees is worth £510million to UK agriculture and horticulture sector.
• There are many, including the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, that consider the use of neonicotinoids as a key factor in the decline of bee and other pollinating insects
• Evidence also shows that more than 90 per cent of honey bee colonies survived from October 2013-March 2014, a time when bees were still exposed to crops treated with neonicotinoid insecticides

On Wednesday the 10 February 2016, SCI’s Public Evening Lecture will enter the debate over the use of neonicotinoids by farmers to support sustainable farming. The lecture will be delivered by Mr Guy Smith, Vice President of the National Farming Union (NFU). In his talk, Mr Smith, will argue the need for analysis based on good science that balances both the needs of UK farmers and the needs of the wildlife that uses their crops as habitat.
