When author and journalist George Monbiot wrote an article for The Guardian on the personal and social effects of loneliness, it instantly went viral.

His first inclination, to write a book on the subject, soon gave way to the idea the topic would be better conveyed through song. With this in mind, he approached folk singer/songwriter Ewan McLennan to suggest a collaboration.

Initial sketches touching on the themes and stories behind loneliness and social isolation have been sent back and forth between the writers, unveiling the politics that underpin the issue and the ways in which people and communities overcome it. This has ultimately lead to some insightful lyrics, melodies and songs crafted by McLennan.

Breaking the Spell of Loneliness is released on 14 October on Fellside Records.
