We are delighted to announce Nikki Ray as our first speaker of our 2015 CLHG Talk series. Please note this months talk is on a Friday as we have our AGM on the Wednesday.

Nikki recently served as a human rights monitor for 3 months in the West Bank and will speak of her experiences and how the occupation affects Palestinians daily.

25 year old Nikki recently completed a master’s degree in Human Rights Law at SOAS, University of London and was eager to do something practical with her degree. She has been a dedicated anti-arms trade and peace campaigner over the last few years and focused on gender and conflict in her master’s degree.

Although Nikki is not religious her service as a human rights monitor was made possible by the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI) who welcome volunteers of any or no religion and from a diversity of ages, gender and nationality.

EAPPI has monitors in 7 placements around the West Bank including the tiny village of Yanoun where Nikki was based. The main purpose of Nikki’s team was to provide protection with their international presence against harassment and violence by Israeli settlers who live in illegal settlement outposts surrounding Yanoun. The team also responded to incidents within their area including violence and harassment by the Israeli army and Israeli settlers against Palestinians. Nikki documented and reported such incidents to the UN and other international agencies. They also monitored access to education of Palestinian children. A major part of the programme is advocacy in the UK to tell the reality of life for Palestinians in the West Bank, which is why Nikki would like to invite you to hear about the experiences of a fellow non-religious person in the West Bank.
