Ravel was perhaps the greatest composer to emerge from the explosion of creativity that was Paris at the start of the 20th century. His piano pieces in particular are amongst the most beautiful and most expressive in the classical repertoire.

This concert will feature the most famous of these pieces, Gaspard de la nuit, which was inspired by the prose poems of the same name by Aloysius Bertrand. By turns unearthly, nightmarish and mysterious Ravel’s masterpiece beautifully conveys the Gothic and eerie themes of the poetry. The concert will also feature Chopin’s Piano Sonata No. 2 in B Flat minor, which incorporates the famous funeral march, and is almost synonymous with the dark and gloomy fantasies of the Gothic.

Featuring the internationally acclaimed pianist Roy Howat, this concert will transport its audience, and convey the brilliant atmosphere of magic and menace contained in some of the world’s greatest piano pieces. The concert will also feature a short talk by the distinguished music expert Richard Stokes exploring the music’s Gothic themes, and some readings of the poetry which inspired the music. Magical music for troubled times…
