Writer and activist Laura Bates discusses her new book The Everyday Sexism Project (Simon & Schuster, 2014). Bates is the founder of the Everyday Sexism Project, a web-based collection of over 60,000 women’s daily experiences of gender inequality. Started in 2012, this quickly became a viral sensation, attracting international press attention, and putting the problem of sexism and gender imbalance firmly on the international media agenda.
Laura Bates writes regularly for The Guardian and The Independent, and her work has appeared in the Financial Times and the New Statesman, among other publications. She contributes to Women Under Siege, a New York-based organisation working against the use of rape as a tool of war in conflict zones worldwide and is an active international speaker as part of the Project’s outreach work. She is the patron of Somerset and Avon Rape and Sexual Abuse Support (SARSAS), part of the Rape Crisis network.
