Silver Screen Science Fiction: Predator

Event type: Evenings & Lates
Date and time: Saturday 16 June | 6.30pm-9pm
Price: Adult: £10.30 | Concession: £9.30
Location: Royal Observatory, Planetarium & Astronomy Centre
Season: Evenings and Lates

An elite team of soldiers face off against an invisible alien foe. Can they win against the odds?

Enjoy screenings of vintage, cult and blockbuster sci-fi movies in our planetarium, followed by a short talk on the science behind the fiction by a Royal Observatory astronomer. Major ‘Dutch’ Schaefer (Arnold Schwarzenegger) finds himself and his team in over their heads when they start to get picked off one by one by an invisible enemy not of this planet. After the screening a Royal Observatory Greenwich astronomer will explore the science behind making things invisible and how the Predator’s thermal vision has all sorts of less horrifying uses in everyday life and astronomy.

This event is part of the Royal Observatory Greenwich’s ‘Universe Unseen’ season (April – September 2018).

Note from Jo who’s been to a couple of these events, though earlier in the year 🙂
During June Greenwich Park shuts at 9.30pm. The event ends at 9pm so possibly you can just make your way out of the park through your preferred gate – I recommend checking with them when you buy your ticket(s). If the park is shut when you leave then the only exit will be the big one at the bottom of the park (St Mary’s Gate). The Observatory usually has a couple of minbuses making several trips to take everyone to that gate (it’s close to the Cutty Sark boat and DLR station). The minibuses aren’t wheelchair accessible though so please give them advanced warning to arrange an alternative. If you’ve arrived in your own car you’ll also exit through St Mary’s Gate and not through Blackheath Gate (the one at the top) if the park’s shut.

The film will be projected onto an area of the domed Planetarium but it looks just like a normal screen, and there’ll be a short talk afterwards.
