The hunter-gatherers in the Malay Peninsula have a remarkable number of words to describe smell. From navigating their environment  to the use of smell in ritual practices, this talk examines the importance of this sense in their society.

With Daniel Kricheff and Alice Rudge

Daniel and Alice are PhD Students from UCL who have carried out doctoral research among Aslian-speaking hunter-gatherer populations in the Malay Peninsula. These societies often have a pronounced interest in olfactory phenemenon, which is apparent in both how the navigate their environment, as well as within ritual and cosmological domains. In addition, recent psycholinguistic research seems to have identified a remarkably large number of smell terms in Aslian languages.
