The extremist militant group ISIS rose to international prominence in 2014. Since then the world has become familiar with its brutal methods and intentions. But what is ISIS and where did it come from?

Join BBC correspondent Caroline Wyatt and Professor Gareth Stansfield as they explore the origins of ISIS and how it has become such a threatening presence.

Caroline Wyatt has reported extensively for the BBC on conflict in the Middle East, including in Iraq and Afghanistan. Gareth Stansfield has extensive personal experience of the Middle East and is Professor of Middle East Politics at the University of Exeter and a Senior Associate Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI).

This talk is linked to current display Fighting Extremes: From Ebola to ISIS, which will be open to view after the talk.
