Christian VIII was extremely interested in culture and science so his reign saw the Court assume a pivotal role in Copenhagen’s cultural life during the last decade of its Golden Age. His travels abroad resulted in him bringing home objects from ancient Greece and he retained a fascination for the works of Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen.
