Professor Arttu Rajantie will be talking about the elusive hypothetical particles, Magnetic Monopoles. Professor Rajantie is Professor of Theoretical Physics at Imperial College London. He is a member of the Theoretical Physics group and his research focuses on applications of quantum field theory in cosmology and particle physics, and he is also involved in the MoEDAL experiment at the LHC. In summer 2015, he led the Monopole Quest exhibit at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition.

“For a long time, physicists have been searching for magnetic monopoles on Earth and in space, from distant galaxies to moon rocks and particle physics experiments such as the new MoEDAL experiment at CERN. In this talk I explain what these hypothetical particles are, and how ideas of symmetry and aesthetics have convinced physicists that they should exist and must be found.”
